Political management interns will be responsible for managing RYM’s summer/fall program of political and educational activities on Capitol Hill. Unlike interns in other offices who fill secretarial and support roles, an RYM intern will be expected to manage events and volunteer for Republican-affiliated groups. In addition they will be responsible for identifying, recruiting, and training young people on Capital Hill and around the country. Many of the other interns that have worked with the organization this summer will return to their campuses in the fall and not only continue in but also take leadership roles in Presidential campaigns, Congressional campaigns, and campus Republican organizations. As an intern, students will be involved in promoting both RYM’s pro-choice, pro-environment, fiscally conservative Republican message and the group’s goal of building a more broadly based inclusive Republican majority. RYM’s staff has been and will be encouraged, and given the opportunity to make numerous contacts with other political staff and interns on Capitol Hill. Meeting and talking to people you have not previously known about politics in Congressional offices, at political events, and at social events is an important skill that the internship both teaches and encourages. Identifying and connecting with new interested people on the phone and by Internet is also an important part of our mission. There are opportunities for interns to specialize in projects that develop special skills including legal issues, public relations, media relations, grassroots organizing, public speaking, campaign management, web outreach, publishing, graphic design, and political fundraising. As an RYM intern, students will be treated as and expected to meet the performance standards of Congressional Committee staff. They will be referred to as RYM staff. Our staff meetings for all our fall staff will begin at 8am each weekday morning in the Longworth House office building restaurant-cafeteria and the office will close at 6:30pm. We will hold a weekly recruiting and networking Happy Hour each Monday evening at Bullfeather’s restaurant around the corner from our offices from 6:30 until 7:30pm. Special speakers from think tanks and interest groups will be brought in to speak at these Happy Hours. Brown bag lunches with issue experts and occasional breakfasts with Members of Congress are also part of our program. Suggested dress is business attire except on days when the House is not in session. Interns will be expected to read the Washington Post on the Metro on the way to work so they can intelligently discuss the day’s political developments at breakfast and throughout the day with political and Congressional staff that will have done the same. RYM encourages additional reading of Capitol Hill publications such as Roll Call, The Hill, Politico, various blogs, and occasionally the Wall Street Journal, NY Times, and Washington Times. As an intern, students will receive training and orientation during morning meetings and will have the opportunity for more on evenings and weekends if they are interested. There will be numerous opportunities for political involvement and networking at evening and weekend activities as well. Campaign involvement, during this summer/fall is encouraged. RYM is looking for and training political leaders who want to help shape the future of the country and of the Republican Party. RYM welcomes all who want to participate in its programs, regardless if they agree on all particular issues.
